Two out of two for Pencoed

PENCOED Cricket Club were in the runs when they travelled to Penarth.

A good knock of 40 from skipper Jack Frewen was a good start and Pencoed on this with centuries for fellow opener Matthew Evans (on his league debut for the club) and Rhodri Owen, who shared a partnership of 161. Evans scored 115 and Owen 113 before the Pencoed innings ended with six wickets down on 338.

When Penarth took to the field, Gareth Williams got the early breakthroughs to take control during a spell with Jonny Hill. Each bowler took three wickets while Simon McCutcheon took 4 – 34 in bowling out the hosts 180 runs shy of the target. Gareth Williams took 3 – 26 and Jonny Hill 3 – 32.

Penarth 158 all out, Pencoed 338-6 (Penarth 6 points v Pencoed 20 points).

The next week, visitors Abertillery won the toss and elected to bat first. Despite the rain trying its best to prevail, the day belonged to skipper Jack Frewen who took a five-wicket haul before guiding his team to victory with an unbeaten 84. 

He was supported in the field by two wickets from James Smith, with one apiece from Tim Moore and Neil Raikes during another all-round strong display of bowling and fielding. Simon McCutcheon took three catches in the field.

When Pencoed batted, Matthew Evans supported his skipper with an unbeaten 50 to continue his fine run of form and round off a resounding victory.

Pencoed 148 /0, Abertillery 145/9. (20 points to Pencoed and 3 to Abertillery).

Pencoed Cricket Club is holding a youth introduction to cricket, starting Monday, 1st June, 6pm to 7.15.pm at Pencoed rugby club. Sessions continue until 6th July and are for age 12/13, boys and girls, to try the game. Soft balls will be used for safety. Get in touch on socials at Pencoed Cricket Club if interested.
