AS the scoreline would suggest, this WRU Cup match went down to the wire.
The Division Two East home side stated their intentions from the off with no nonsense carries from their bigger pack but were met with a determined Pencoed defence. The Abergavenny midfield was also route one but got no joy – indeed a double hit from centres Jordan Bissett and Morgan Jones on home centre Harry Hindmarsh saw the player take no further part in the match.
Playing into the elements, Pencoed opened the scoring with a fine solo effort from left wing Ryan Russell, his short kick finding a firm part of the surface to collect the kind bounce and race over from some 40 metres-plus.
The home side replied with a penalty goal from outside half and captain, Rhys Jones and matters stayed at 3-5 until the interval.
It was not a day for pretty rugby and a hard slog ensued in the deteriorating conditions. Pencoed edged further in front with a penalty goal from full back Iwan Powell. Going into the final minutes it looked as if the home side had snatched victory with a try following a break from right wing Anthony Squire, Jones adding the conversion to lead 10-8.
With the match now in injury time, Pencoed got a foothold some 30 metres out and a home error gave them a penalty opportunity. Powell made no mistake to put his side into the last 16 of the competition, to the delight of the red, white and blue support. A number of Pencoed players put their hands up for man of the match, Morgan Jones was solid in midfield, flanker Jac Morgan, Lewis Bowen, Jake Hall for their all-round work rate, but it was young Powell who received the accolade. On Saturday, Pencoed travel to Maesteg Harlequins for a Division Two West Central league match, 2.30pm ko.
