Rhoose booker Jay Munn has extended his unbeaten professional record to eight fights despite being below par during his points victory over Richard Helm at the Vale Sports Arena on Saturday, 25th June.
The 23-year-old, known as the ‘Rhoose Rhino’ damaged his back two weeks before the fight and suffered a heavy cold, which led to an agreement between the parties to reduce the light-middleweight contest from six to four rounds.
Helm, a 35-year-old from Rochdale in Lancashire provided Munn with one of his toughest tests to date in a contest that could have gone either way, with the ‘Rhoose Rhino’ winning 39-38 on points.
The following day, Munn was feeling the effects of the fight and on Tuesday he went to hospital for a precautionary brain scan.
Following his hospital visit, Munn asked his manager, former Welsh professional boxer Gary Lockett to postpone his next scheduled fight date of 13 August to allow him time to fully recover.
Reflecting on a difficult weekend, Munn said: “Richard was a very tough opponent and he came here to win. I wasn’t in a good place when I woke up the day after the fight and by Tuesday I knew I needed to get it checked out at the hospital.

“I was suffering the effects of concussion and I told Gary I need to take it easy for the next couple of weeks before hitting it hard in the gym.”
Saturday’s disappointing performance left Munn and Lockett with a sense of unfinished business, and they are trying to agree a rematch with Helm at the Vale Sports Arena on 10th September: “I’d like a rematch to settle it. I need to prove to everyone that I was having an off day and I want to set things right,” he said.
Looking ahead to his plans for the latter part of the year, Munn said: “My priority is to get myself better and return to training.
“If all goes well in the rematch with Richard Helm, I hope to finish off the year by stepping up to an eight rounder, and then early next year I want to have a title fight.”
Following Munn’s win, Newport middleweight Kyran Jones topped the bill with a four-round points victory over experienced Mexican Fernando Valencia.
