THE BOOBIE BANK

With Amy Greenfield, Awsome.Wales

EVERY woman knows the pain of a broken or ill-fitting bra.

The ones with the snapped underwires, or that pinch under your arm or simply don’t contain ‘the girls’ as snugly as they used to.

But what can you do with your pre-loved honker hankies?

Unfortunately, most charity shops won’t accept used underwear for hygiene reasons, but that doesn’t mean that your dumpling holders are destined for landfill.

Charity, Breast Cancer Research have launched their awesome bra recycling scheme, which takes your unwanted or unloved bras and raises vital funds in the process.

Your bras will also help to support small businesses in Africa, where a pioneering project with recycling partners in Togo, Ghana, and Kenya carefully sorts and repairs bras that can be worn again and recovers the textiles and fabric from those that are past their best.

Bras are an unaffordable luxury for many women in developing countries as local production is prohibitively expensive, so this project is providing a vital service.

Plus, for every tonne of bras collected, Against Breast Cancer receives £700 to fund their research.

With more than 50,000 women in the Vale of Glamorgan you could really help make a difference!

To find your nearest bra bank, simply visit www.againstbreastcancer.org.uk and look at their interactive map.

So, if your over the shoulder boulder holder just isn’t up to the job anymore, pass it on to Against Breast Cancer and it can have a new life, providing for people and saving the planet at the same time.

  1. Fab idea. I have a small bag of bras I have kept for recycling. Where can I take them locally (vale of glam).

  2. Why is the Barry Council not taking pride in the appearance of this town? For example, all of the paving are not repaired by having the paving slabs flat to the ground? Just have a look. Why are we having small nature reserves in both sides of the pedestrian side walks throughout Holten road near all the building’s starting to be over grown? And if if just weed killer is used, why isn’t there a removal of the dead weeds/grass? Why isn’t there more trees being placed / planted or replaced in the area past the entrance gates to the town centre? Why isn’t thete more sittings placed in front of lloyds bank? Just square stones would do. Not expensive but even stone ones would do. Why not have bro radio be playing from when the shops open to when they closed? From 0900-1700. The speakers are there and not being used. This is Barry’s radio station. Christmas time , the radio was only used for a while. The majority of people that come to town are elderly. And familys. Yet nothing is really provided for them. More and more accommodations are being made available for people coming to the town. Show them what this town has to offer by just some good things that this town has to offer compaired to other high streets. Does any of the town council havwa walk in Barry and see what they have? Are any of the town councillors from Barry? Or have they ever done any shopping in town to see how they they can in prove their town?
