GAVIN & STACEY: ‘Mick’ drops by for a chat, selfies, pizza – then reads all about it!
ONE of the stars of Gavin and Stacey, Larry Lamb, who plays Michael ‘Mick’ Shipman in the BBC hit show, was spotted on Barry Island on Friday, 13th September.
In a break from filming the Christmas day special, Larry talked and had selfies taken with fans while enjoying the sights and sounds of Whitmore Bay.
Running the news on his visit in this week’s printed edition of the Glamorgan Star, Larry was seen yesterday in Marco’s Cafe on Barry Island’s promenade, reading all about it on the local newspaper’s front page.
Cafe owner, Marco Zeraschi took a snapshot (see below) of the well known and popular actor as he popped in for refreshments after a morning swim.
Marco’s Cafe appeared in the very first episode of Gavin & Stacey as Stacey, played by actor and radio presenter Joanna Page, worked at the seafront cafe. It also stocks supplies of the Glamorgan Star’s printed newspaper.
Other Gavin & Stacey stars are no strangers to the cafe either. The day before filming was set to begin last month, 1st September, Ruth Jones aka ‘Nessa’, was seen having coffee and happily speaking with fans of the show.
Friend of Larry Lamb and owner of Marco’s Cafe said: “Larry popped in for a coffee and a bacon sandwich after a nice early morning swim with friends and a quick read of the local newspaper.”
Last week, Larry popped over to the Front Room pizzeria at the Pumphouse to enjoy a proper Ronnie pizza with fried dough and dip with local business owners Marco and Tino Zeraschi.
The actor has an unlikely connection with pizzas at Front Room as they are customers of Wildfarmed Flour – a company that uses regenerative farming methods. Larry’s son, George, is one of the three founders.

Speaking with the Glamorgan Star, Jeno Lewis general manager of the pizzeria said: “Larry was an absolute gent. Chatted with all members of staff and customers at Front Room. He loved getting to know people from the area and took lots of photos with everyone.
“Thank you, Larry, for your support – as a small independent business, it means a lot! We love welcoming familiar and new faces to Front Room.”
Marco Zeraschi said: “It was a real pleasure to enjoy a meal and a catchup with Larry. The opportunity came about because Larry’s son George supplies them with flour. George is a talented TV and radio presenter in his own right, but nowadays he’s also a keen farmer with a focus on sustainability and regeneration.
“Larry has been a friend for around 15 years now, and I always enjoy his company. He’s very down-to-earth and totally unpretentious.
“Larry is a very cultured and well-read man and we talk about a huge range of topics. We stay off politics and religion, but apart from that we discuss everything. We share a passion for Italy and have many other mutual interests. That said, I don’t share his love of cold water swimming!
“Later that day, I took Larry down to Barry Island and he spent around two hours having selfies taken with fans. He’s very much a people person. He wouldn’t want anyone to go home disappointed so he makes time for everyone who wants to meet him. It was wonderful to see so many happy faces, meeting Larry really made their day.”
