SPORT: Centurions Seconds march on with a big win

WITH the First XI game falling victim to the weather, Sully Centurions Second XI took centre stage when they hosted Abertillery at Burnham Avenue.
There had been a fair amount of rain, but the game started on time. The visitors batted first and had the worst possible start when two wickets went down without a run scored. James fell to Zia Gehlan and Bayliss was bowled by new boy Imran Ahmed in the second over.
Wickets kept falling and by the 16th, Abertillery were 30 for 7. However, Watson and Hutchings shared a stand of 34 before Watson fell for nine. The innings closed on 77 all out in the 35th over. Hutchings, with 39, was the top scorer for the visitors. For Centurions, Zia’s 4 for 19 was the standout bowling performance. Imran finished with 1 for 8 off his 8 overs, while Ethan Fiddler picked up two wickets and brother Gareth, returning to Sully after a gap of several years, chipped in with 1 for 9, in a spell that included four maidens.
After tea, with one eye on the weather, the Centurions’ openers Zia Gehlan and Rukshan Silva, set about the task of chasing down the target. They had reached 35 in the sixth over when Zia was bowled by Watson for 10. Rukshan was joined by Gethin Hicks, and this pair managed to reach the target in the 14th over. Rukshan ended on 47 not out, while Hicks was 16 not out. This victory puts Sully in second place, just one point behind leaders Abercarn.
