THE Barry Cup semi-finals were played at Jenner Park in a back-to-back cup extravaganza.
Penarth Town made it through to their second Barry Cup final in three years as they edged Championship leaders Tynewydd on penalties. Penarth, who had dispatched Cogan and Island Marine en route took the lead through Paul Beedell but Tynewydd came back to level through Stefan Ross.
Tynewydd have seen off higher level opposition throughout the cup having claimed the scalps of AFC Rhoose and St Athan but this was a bridge too far as Penarth were the ones to hold their nerve. winning 4-3 in the dreaded penalty shoot out. Penarth won the Barry Cup in 2022 and will be looking to repeat that feat and pick up a cup double as they also chase glory in the Premier Division’s Supporters Cup.
In the finals, it will be same opposition as Barry Athletic will be waiting. The Premier Division leaders will be chasing a treble. Athletic came through their semi-final with a 4-1 over Cardiff Airport. Teejay Caton gave Athletic the lead before Danny Hansen Taylor doubled the advantage. Olly Tipples made it three with his first of the afternoon before Jon Cummings pulled one back for Airport, but it was Athletic’s captain fantastic, league top scorer and talisman Olly Tipples who grabbed his second and Athletic’s fourth to book their spot in the early May Vale league showpiece, in what appears to be their first under the Barry Athletic name.
Latest league action
St Athan returned to the top of the Vale Premier Division with an emphatic 7-0 victory over Vale United. Anton Williamson hit a hat-trick, with Ben Boyd adding a brace. Nicky Cox headed in his first of the season before Sean Nash completed the rout. St Athan sit one point ahead of second place Barry Athletic and two points ahead of Cardiff Airport with this title race going to the wire.
AFC Rhoose edged out Island Marine 1-0, Darren Townsend scoring the decisive goal to move Rhoose into sixth place. While FC Barry survived a second half fight back by Vale Athletic to hold on and come out 3-2 winners.
In the Championship A, Cadoxton Imps and Cogan Coronation played out a 1-1 draw, while Barry Athletic Reserves thumped Vale Madrid 3-0 away at Burnham Avenue.
Leaders Tynewydd extended their lead at the top to 10 points and are on the brink of winning the title after they saw off Cwm Talwg 6-2, Gareth Griffiths scoring two in the win.
In the Championship B, Peterston super Ely gave themselves some breathing room at the top with a 5-0 victory over AFC Rhoose Development, with St Athan Reserves twice blowing a two-goal advantage to draw 3-3 with Porthkerry Panthers. Peterston now find themselves five points clear at the top. Island Marine Reserves stay fourth after a 5-0 win over St Athan Thirds with Josh Kirke in fine goal scoring form.
