Vale MP runs London Marathon for Atal Y Fro and Macmillan Cancer Support

VALE MP Alun Cairns will run is ninth London Marathon for Macmillan Cancer and Atal Y Fro on Sunday, 3rd October.

Atal y Fro – a Barry based domestic violence charity, has seen first-hand the impact of the rise in domestic violence over lockdown. Its 24-hour service helps families break the cycle of domestic violence and abuse.

Macmillan Cancer Support has also faced pressures because of Covid and is leading a campaign to ensure every cancer patient receives the right treatment and support.

The marathon is set return to London’s streets for the first time in 30 months as Mr Cairns aims to beat his personal fundraising target of £10,000.

He said: “I want to raise as much money as I can for these two fantastic charities. I have raised almost £60,000 through the years and I hope I can increase this yet further. Macmillan Cancer have also assured me that the money raised will go directly in supporting those affected by cancer right here in the Vale. Having meet representatives from both of the charities to learn of their incredibly work in the Vale, I am inspired and determined to raise as much as I can.”

Head of partnerships for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales, Richard Pugh said: “More than 98 per cent of Macmillan’s funding comes directly from donations, but we have seen a huge fall in our fundraising income as a direct result of Covid-19. It is fantastic to see such a flagship event as the London Marathon once again taking place and we are very proud indeed to be its charity of the year. We would like to say a huge thanks to Alun for taking on those gruelling 26 miles on our behalf. Every penny and every mile really does count, as Macmillan and people with cancer have never needed the public’s help more than we do right now.”
