Good win for Barry Youth

Cardiff Rugby South One League - Llandaff 14, Barry RFC Youth 38

BARRY shrugged off the disappointment of a National Plate defeat the previous week to run in six tries and move up to second in the league with a convincing victory at basement side Llandaff.

Determined to start strongly, Barry’s eagerness to get off the line and stop Llandaff was penalised for offside time and time again, two penalties giving the hosts a 6-0 lead. When Barry settled down, a well-worked backs move saw Tom Provis race over, and then convert his own try, the first of four conversions.

Barry grew in confidence and their dominant forwards resulted in Isaac Thomas going clear for Barry’s second. Discipline continued to be an issue, and a yellow card followed a late hit. The penalty gifted Llandaff field position, which saw them grab a try.

But on the stroke of half-time, 14-man Barry found themselves in striking distance, captain Rhys Berhens forcing his way over for a 21-11 interval lead.

With deteriorating weather, and a growing number of penalties going against Barry, the game became stop-start. Barry, back at full-strength, went searching for a fourth try and a bonus point, which came courtesy of a powerful carry from No 8 and man of the match Riley Hawkins with 20 minutes to go.

Barry settled and started to play some nice rugby, with a lineout on halfway resulting in a well-executed backs move sending Isaac Thomas over for his second without a hand being laid on him. More chances came Barry’s way, but the sixth try didn’t arrive until late on when scrum half Morgan Beasley sniped from close range.

“We were pleased with the bonus point, and some of the rugby played in parts,” said head coach Peter O’Sullivan, “but feel there is still a lot more to come from this young team.”
Barry’s next fixture is a visit to top of the table Llantwit Fardre on 15th November.
