IT WAS another mixed bag for Sully Centurions this week, with the First XI slipping at home and the Second XI marching on at the top of the table.
The Firsts hosted Crumlin at Burnham Avenue and made a great start when Harri Edwards had opener Lowther caught behind by Rhett Jones with just one run on the board. However, this brought Veall brothers, Simon and Ieuan, together. They proceeded to take the Sully attack apart and put on an amazing 206 for the second wicket.
After six bowlers had been used, skipper Ricki Griffett brought himself on and took the wicket of Ieuan Veall, who was out for 104. Ricki took two more in his short spell, including that of Simon Veall, who went for 94. But it was too little, too late, with the innings ending on 246-4.
In reply, Kieron Ferriday and Rhett Jones took the score to 35 when Ferriday was bowled by Alderson for 15. They put on another 41 before Ellis was dismissed by Kinsey for 12. Jake Griffett came and went cheaply. This brought in Ricki Griffett, who played a real captain’s knock, holding the innings together.
Rhett Jones’ innings ended when he was bowled by Simon Veall for a well-made 46. Apart from a spirited 21 from James Haswell, there were few other highlights for Centurions. The score of 219 was well short of the required total. Obviously, Ricki Griffet was Sully’s man of the match, with an unbeaten 74, to add to his 3-34 with the ball.

The Seconds travelled to face Miskin Manor Thirds at Tonyrefail. After winning the toss, skipper Zia Gehlan opted to field. Again, a wicket fell early, with Basil John having Newberry caught behind for just five. Crook and Sawant took the score to 51 when Sawant was caught by Sonu for 29, to give John his second victim. Then a flurry of wickets fell within a short space of time and soon Miskin were reeling at 74 for 7.
But the eighth wicket pair of Varghese (45 not out) and Kuriakose (33) played sensibly and doubled the score. A late run out gave Sully nine wickets and a target of 161 to chase. Kapil (3-19) and John (2-37) were Centurions’ bowling stars.
After tea, Centurions got off to a dreadful start, with two early wickets, including a duck for last week’s century maker Sonu. At 7 for 2, the innings need some rebuilding. Basil John (33) and Shaffiq Rehman (45) took the score along to 84 before Basil was trapped lbw by Hembrow.
The middle/late order chipped in with some sensible batting, nudging the score along towards the target. Jag Gorsia (16 not out) Bharat (18), along with 11 each for Kapil and Halai, saw Sully home in the 29th over.
This leaves Centurions 17 points clear at the top.
