Centurions do the double over Dinas

SULLY Centurions now have bragging rights over neighbours Dinas Powys after both sides recorded victories.

The First XI made the short trip to Bryn-y-Don and found themselves fielding after losing the toss. Centurions made a good start, when White fell to Harish Hirani for just 3 with the score on 9.

However, Samaje and Jones went on to add 123 runs for the second wicket. Jones eventually fell when Ricki Griffett bowled him for 43. Hurley fell to Lloyd Bruce for a duck and Samaje stuck around but kept losing partners. Thotage went for 20, lbw to Jake Griffett after a partnership of 49.

Then, with the score on 214, Jake struck again, having Brotherton caught for 19. That was the last wicket to fall, as Samaje was unbeaten on 123 at the end, with Mitchell keeping him company for 17 not out. The total of 256 for 5 was going to be a tough one to overtake for Centurions.

Sully opened their innings in disastrous fashion, losing Rhett Jones and Gethin Hicks cheaply, leaving the total on 9-2. Kieron Ferriday was joined by Shae Ellis and they began repairing the damage. In fact, they put on 82 for the third wicket before Ellis was caught for 24, off the bowling of Hiscocks.

However, at 91 for 3, there was still a lot of work to do. Ferriday was joined by Jake Griffett and this partnership began to turn the game on its head. Both Jake and Kieron began finding the boundary on a regular basis and slowly brought Centurions back into the game. The partnership remained unbeaten as Griffett ended on 87 not out, including nine fours and three sixes. Ferriday ended on 98 not out (with six sixes and six fours) and the target was reached in the 37^th over.

For Dinas Powys, Hurly and Hiscocks took one wicket each, along with a run out. This victory has stemmed the recent run of defeats and has given Sully the opportunity to go into the last six matches with renewed confidence.

The Second XI continue to march on at the top of the table with a convincing win at home to Dinas Powys Seconds. Batting first, the opening pair of Basil John and Gurvinder ‘Sonu’ Singh soon took a liking to the bowling. Basil led the way with plenty of expansive shots that found the boundary. They put on 131 for the first wicket, with the wicket of Sonu, who fell for 30, ending the partnership.

Shan Rehman (25) took over and he and Basil had added another 50 runs for the second wicket when Basil was caught off the bowling of Morley for 116, a knock that included nine sixes! The runs kept coming and, although the wickets also continued, some valuable partnerships kept the scoreboard ticking over. Vasant hit 48, with 26 for Imran, with a late flurry getting Halai to 19 not out at the end. This left the total on a formidable 334 for 8. For Dinas, Vishesh, Rollnick and Kerris all took two wickets each.

After tea, the home side lost the early wicket of Vishesh for 11. Some valuable runs were being scored as the innings progressed, but wickets kept falling. Roberts, who hit a half-century, was holding the innings together but when he fell to Kapil, with the score on158 for 6, the writing was on the wall. Dinas ran out of overs and finished on172 for 8. Kapil Rokad, with 3-13 from his five overs, was the star with the ball for Sully.
