BARRY RFC’s pre-season match against Brynmawr tomorrow (Saturday, 15th August) has been called off as the Reservoir Field pitch is too hard, after weeks without rain, to allow full contact.
The game has been rescheduled for Saturday, 5th September, one week before the start of the regular season.
“It’s frustrating, but we can’t do any full contact at present,” said head coach Mike Morgan. As the Brynmawr pitch is also too hard, the match could not be switched, and neither Barry nor Brynmawr could find an available alternative all-weather pitch.
Barry had a training game at Llanishen on Tuesday. “We kept intensity in the contact area low,” said Morgan. “We got a lot out of it. Tested our new lineout and backline moves, so it was a bit more real, and a positive exercise.”
Barry are scheduled to visit Nantyffyllon for a pre-season game on Saturday, 22nd August, and Morgan is planning to contact his counterpart over the weekend to assess the situation.
*Barry have been drawn away to Pill Harriers in the Admiral National League Division 2 Cup first round on 3rd October. The Newport-based side play in Division 2 East.
