Cup and league wins for Ely Rangers

SW Premier League round up by Terry Allday

IN Welsh Cup Qualifying round one action, Ely Rangers faced a tricky trip to Premier Division rivals Pontyclun.

Rangers raced into a 3-0 lead at half time with goals from Joe Rees, Morgan Clarke and Alex Long. Despite a Pontyclun come back, Rangers held on to win 3-2. They have been drawn away against PILCS from the Gwent Premier League in round one.

Last Saturday, they were back in league action and, after two opening draws, came away from their trip to Aber Valley league with a 5-1 victory. Goals from Reuben Bryl, Richard Greaves and an Alex Long hat-trick that included two penalties.

Dinas Powys followed up their opening league victory with a comfortable 3-0 home win against last season’s promotion challengers Llangeinor. Luke Boyle opened the scoring and got his second just after half time before completing his hat-trick late in the game. However, the Ravens had a bad day at the office last Saturday, going down 6-0 to Cardiff Cosmos.

Cogan Corries will be content with their opening start to the season and sit at the top of Division One West. They had two difficult away games in the Maesteg area – a 2-2 draw at Bettws and 2-1 victory at Caerau All Whites. Going two goals down at Bettws Corries fought back with two of their own from Cameron Starling and Josh Nicholls. Two early goals from Jack Preston sealed their win at Caerau.

Barry Athletic’s FAW Welsh Cup hopes ended with a creditable 6-4 defeat at the hands of Abertillery Bluebirds who play in the top flight of the Gwent Premier League. Their goals came from Morgan Stavert-Hawkins (two), Ash Fitchett and Ellis Dennison. Athletic were back in league action on the Bank Holiday weekend in a Vale derby against Vale United at Corntown.

Teejay Caton opened the scoring to give Athletic a half time lead. Vale Stags equalised early in the second half through Adam Preece before a brace of penalties by Morgan Stavert-Hawkins put Athletic 3-1 up. A goal for Vale by Dan Hanson closed the gap before Teejay Caton completed his hat-trick, and Karol Wojciechowski scored a sixth in a 6-2 victory

Vale United’s Welsh Cup participation ended on 22nd August when they went out to South Gower from the West Wales Premier League by 2-1. Aaron Nathan scored Vale’s goal.

Sully Sport have been in limited action but beat Tonypandy Albion 3-2 in Division One West. On their scoresheet was Conner McInnery and a Tim Hill penalty before Conner McInnery got his second.

There are two testing league games coming up for Dinas Powys against newly promoted teams – home to Pentyrch Rangers followed by an away trip to the Rhondda Bulldogs – Ton Pentre.
