Council Leader’s New Year Honour
Council Leader’s New Year Honour
Cllr Neil Moore, Leader of the Vale Council, has been awarded the Order of the British Empire for his contribution to public service in the New Year Honours list 2022.
A Vale Council spokesperson said that Cllr Moore’s focus over the last two years has been the council’s response to the Covid pandemic. The honour has, however, been bestowed in recognition of more than three decades of public service.
Currently in his second spell as leader of the council, Cllr Moore represents the Cadoc ward in Barry. He was first elected 33 years ago to what was then the Barry Borough Council in 1988
From 1991 to 1992, he served as vice chairman of the Environmental Health Committee. He then served on the Severnside local authority board for the Cardiff Bay Barrage project from 1993 – 1995. In 1995 Cllr Moore was named as chairman of the shadow Vale of Glamorgan Authority to help lead the transition to the newly-formed Vale of Glamorgan Council.
Having been active in local politics since 1966, Neil Moore has led the Vale Labour Group since 2008 (he also held the position from 1999 to 2006).
Cllr Lis Burnett, Deputy Leader of the Vale Council, said: “Neil’s dedication and commitment to the Vale and its residents is absolute. He has battled relentlessly for the Vale at all levels of government over many years but always with respect, honesty and often a touch of humour.
“It is this rare talent that has enabled him to build partnerships with political opponents and allies across the Vale and beyond to ensure the stability and strength of our public services. Something that has been so vital over the past two years. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of recognition.”
Cllr Gwyn John, Leader of the Llantwit First Independents group, said: “I am delighted to hear that Neil has been recognised like this. In 22 years as a councillor, I have never met anyone who works as hard for residents as Neil. He has proven time and time again that he is determined to work for the people of the Vale, no matter where they are from, to make sure they have the best council possible.”
Cllr Ben Gray, cabinet member for Social Care and Health, said: “As a group leader working alongside Neil in coalition, I get to see every day the commitment he puts into public service, I am pleased to see that his unwavering passion for the Vale of Glamorgan has been recognised by Her Majesty.”
Vale Council Managing Director, Rob Thomas, said: “On behalf of the council staff, I congratulate Cllr Moore on receiving the honour of Order of the British Empire. An OBE is a fitting recognition of a life devoted to community and public service. Neil’s is greatly deserved.”
Neil Moore has lived in Barry since 1979 with his wife Anne. He has two grown up children, who were both educated locally, and is a proud grandfather to three grandchildren. He worked as an Environmental Health Officer and Principal Trading Standards Officer for South Glamorgan and Cardiff County councils until he took early retirement in 2002.
A keen rugby fan, Neil supports Wales as well as being a member of Cardiff Rugby and Cardiff RFC. The rest of his spare time is taken up looking after his grandchildren, whenever he can.
