BARRY TOWN UNITED will aim to make it three wins from their most recent four games in the JD Cymru Premier when they play host to bottom club Aberystwyth Town at Jenner Park on Saturday.
Few were surprised when the Linnets succumbed to a 6-2 home defeat against The New Saints a fortnight ago, as the Oswestry side have been the dominant force in Welsh domestic football for some years.
The New Saints have begun the current campaign strongly with 12 wins and two draws from 14 matches, scoring a total of 51 goals while conceding just 11.
Last Saturday, Barry paid their first ever visit to Colwyn Bay’s Llanelian Road ground to take on their fellow newly-promoted side, and Steve Jenkins’s men bounced back from the previous week’s blip when Kayne McLaggon’s strike early in the second half gave them a 1-0 win.
Barry had a penalty rejected early on when Ollie Hulbert’s cross from the left appeared to hit Bay defender Berti Diau on his left arm, but referee Thomas Owen waved play on.
With half-an-hour gone, Colwyn Bay’s Jamie Cumming passed the ball to Udoyen Akpan but his shot from just outside the box was impressively saved by Linnets goalkeeper Luc Rees.
Moments later, Barry had their best chance of the half when Lucas Tomlinson’s long-range effort was pushed to safety by Colwyn Bay ‘keeper Alfie Brooks.
The key moment in the game came just 13 seconds after the restart when Keenan Patten played forward to Ollie Hulbert, whose header found the feet of Kayne McLaggon, who skipped past his marker and fired a low shot to the right of the goalkeeper to give the Linnets a 1-0 lead.
The home side played an altogether more attacking game for the rest of the second half, and one of their best efforts saw Bay captain Tom McCready shoot straight at Rees, while later on, the Barry defence cleared the ball following a goal line scramble.
Barry kept up the pressure with further shots on target from Tomlinson and Hulbert, but the scoreline remained the same and they made the long journey home having secured three points.
On Saturday, the Linnets face Aberystwyth Town, who last Friday secured only their second league win of the season when two goals inside the opening half hour helped them secure a 2-0 win away at Penybont.
