Barry RFC triumph over students in an all-action game

A fast-flowing and entertaining game saw Barry run in five tries in front of a large crowd at the Reservoir Field, restricting Cardiff Met to just one score in what head coach Liam Scott described as “a real good test”.
After a three-week break from action, this was the first of three competitive matches as Barry build for the start of the league season on November 13. The team visits Cardiff Met on Saturday and hosts St Peter’s in the Mallett Cup on October 23, prior to the international break.
With both sides committed to running rugby, the first half was action-packed, Barry taking the lead in the 11th minute when Ashton Allen finished off a drive after Cardiff Met had been penalised in the red zone, Einan Scott converting.
And to round off a first half full of entertaining rugby, Dave Provis gave Barry a 12-0 lead following a kick ahead and chase two minutes before the break.
Coach Scott emphasised at half-time the need for a good performance, “from the first minute to the last”, and that’s what he got. Cardiff Met were always competitive and Barry had to work hard at times as the visitors threatened.
Cardiff Met tested Barry early in the second half, but the home side defended well and launched some counter attacks of their own. But the visitors finally broke through in the 64th minute, the speedy and always dangerous Jack Davies outpacing the defence to score in the corner.
Barry hit back three minutes later, Alyn Evans surging over after a lineout and drive, Scott converting.
And in the last four minutes, Barry added further tries. Ethan Dicks weaved his way through the Met defence in the 78th minute, and Dom Busuttil ended a good passing move with the clock in the red, Scott converting both for a comfortable and well-deserved victory.
Coach Scott said the performance had been built on a good week in training. “Everyone involved trained well on Thursday, which allowed us to really get into detail and to execute a good game plan. It was a really good performance, and a really good game.”
