Barry RFC Youth 15 Rhiwbina 27
BARRY’S Youth team may have been beaten, but they ended the campaign with a cup as winners of the A Division. Rhiwbina, winners of the B Division, took the honours in the play-off at Llanishen, but only made certain of victory in the dying moments.
At one stage, Barry were 8-7 in front but they trailed 20-15 with a few minutes to go. They crossed the line; only the grounding was not confirmed, and Rhiwbina then drove to the other end, taking advantage of an error to clinch the game.
After the disappointment of the WRU National Cup defeat against Caerphilly two weeks earlier, when several decisions against them puzzled the team, Barry had an ominous sense of déjà vu when Rhiwbina were awarded a disputed first-half try.
“But credit to Rhiwbina,” said Barry head coach John Dimond. “They took their chances. We didn’t. We were rusty. The lack of games again showed. We were just flat on the day.
“It took us too long to get into the game. When we did, we showed what we could do, and scored. But we struggled to keep the momentum going.”
Braydon Griffiths scored all Barry’s points: two tries, one conversion and a penalty.
In the second half of the season, Barry will be competing in the Cardiff Region National Premiership, playing seven games, starting with a visit to Merthyr on 20th January. Other teams in the top division are Builth Wells, Cambrian Welfare, Fairwater, St Peter’s, Rhiwbina and Treorchy.
Dimond is hoping to get a game in prior to the Merthyr fixture. He is well aware that this league is tougher than the South Cup. “If we go into this competition half-cock, we could suffer,” he said.
