Busiest day ever for RNLI as paddle boarders are caught out

PORTHCAWL RNLI volunteers has had their busiest day on record!

They launched the inshore lifeboats a total of 11 times to separate incidents. The first call came on Thursday, 25th June at 3.53am with the final call of the day at 10.13pm. Some volunteers responded to all of the calls!

Although the RNLI had issued a warning about the problems of offshore winds, it seems that quite a few paddleboarders ‘missed the memo’.

A Porthcawl RNLI spokesperson said: “Launches included assisting over 20 paddleboarders in difficulty in offshore winds, swimmers in difficulty and a casualty who required extraction from an inaccessible area at Newton Beach.”

Friday was quieter, with an evening callout to another paddleboarder in difficulty and there was a launch on Saturday at 11.02am to a yacht in difficulty with engine failure near Nash Point.

The spokesperson added: “Despite the recent heatwave, our volunteer crews have responded swiftly time and time again because when someone is in difficulty in the water, every second counts – we are incredibly grateful for their selflessness and dependability.

“It’s only thanks to our generous supporters is any of this possible: To help power Porthcawl RNLI to our next rescue here.
