Cosmeston Lakes invaded by anti-social teenagers
THE Vale Council says the heat wave has forced it to ask South Wales Police to issue a Dispersal Order to combat dangerous behaviour at Cosmeston Country Park.
The Order enables Police Officers to direct individuals or groups to leave an area if their behaviour may cause alarm or distress to the public.
It will be in place until Friday evening and there will also be Police patrolling the park.
Rob Thomas, Chief Executive of the Vale Council, said: “We have been in discussion with South Wales Police about this situation, which has escalated. Large numbers of teenagers have been jumping into the water and engaging in anti-social behaviour.
“Repeated requests to stop have been ignored, as have warnings about the risks of entering open water without lifeguards and safety precautions in place.
“Council staff have been met with abuse as they attempt to protect youngsters from serious injury. Cold water shock can kill as can strong currents and hidden hazards.”
A council spokesperson added: “Parents are politely asked to support the Council and Police in this action by reminding youngsters of these dangers and encouraging them to only swim in designated bathing locations.”
South Wales Police is also asking parents to speak with their children and young people about the dangers of swimming and jumping into the lake.
