SIR Starmer and the Granny Harmers, a group that makes fun of the prime minister, has topped the UK download charts and is expected to dominate the charts for Christmas.
With Christmas just days away, it is difficult to avoid hearing classic holiday music. However, this year’s favourite Christmas song is all about UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and The Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves, who controversally announced in October’s budget that winter fuel payments for pensioners would be means tested.
Raising donations for Age UK, the band’s JustGiving page reads: “Not a single person in the UK in 2024 should die because of the cold.”
Written by Chris Middleton, the charity song is a parody of the 1974 Mud classic Lonely This Christmas with lyrics including: ‘It’ll be freezing this Christmas without fuel at home’.
The single has gone viral all over social media, with 1,444,364 views on YouTube alone:
A spokesperson for Sir Starmer and the Granny Harmers said via JustGiving: “Keir Starmer and the Labour Party have decided to cut the Winter Fuel Allowance, meaning more than 9 million pensioners will lose out on payment, and only those on Pension Credit will now be able to claim it. That means any pensioner who earns more than £11,343.80 a year may now have to choose between heating and eating.
“Indeed, more than 40,000 pensioners who are terminally ill will lose the winter fuel payment according to the Telegraph, and the Winter Fuel Payment cut will put 50,000 pensioners into poverty next year according to the BBC.
“Join us in demanding better for our pensioners. Share Freezing This Christmas and help spread the message.”
Commenting on the UK Government’s decision to means test Winter Fuel Payments, a spokesperson for Age Concern said: “Means-testing WFP this winter, with virtually no notice and no compensatory measures to protect poor and vulnerable pensioners, is the wrong policy decision, and one that will potentially jeopardise their health as well as their finances – the last thing they or the NHS needs.
“With winter now just over the horizon, the Government should halt their proposed change to WFP and think again, given the clear evidence of how it will hurt the older people who need it the most.”
