CHURCH COLUMN

Church Column
By Rev’d Zoë King
I WOKE up at 4am one morning and wrote in the notebook by the bed bucket festival and promptly fell asleep.
When I woke up again, I have to admit I was a little stumped why I’d written this down and I was pretty certain I hadn’t had a vision from God in the night to think about buckets.
Across Barry the anglican church has four churches and we try to work together on different things but since being here there hasn’t been much socialising for obvious covid reasons, and I’d been trying to think about how we could do something light hearted yet anyone could have a go at. Hence the sudden inspiration for a bucket festival…
What is a bucket festival? We have challenged the church and we are hoping to do a charm offensive on local independent traders and community groups if they would like to join in to create something with a bucket (of the bucket and spade variety) for example I’ve planted some mint in mine and I’m going to put a cup and saucer by it and write more tea vicar?
It is slightly daft, but we felt it was an opportunity to allow people some creativity, to get together and to celebrate our fabulous seaside location and there’s going to be an exhibition of these creations in St Marys on Saturday 27th November.
Often Christians and people who go to church can be seen as serious or slightly missing a sense of humour – it’s always been important to me to show that having a faith is something you take seriously but you don’t have to be serious all the time. Jesus loved nothing more than spending time with people, enjoying food with people and while doing a serious job for God his father he also enjoyed being with people.
So, my bonkers idea for buckets is a chance for us to get together – it’s a chance for people to come into St Mary’s and there will be a pop up cafe as well. So why not come along to our Bucket Bonanza?
