Rugby: Cowbridge regret letting chances slip

THE visitors to the Athletic Field on 22nd April were Llantwit Fardre, who left with the win in a game where Cowbridge should have been much further ahead at half time.
Three days before, Cowbridge had been involved in a 12-try thriller at Llanishen. Cowbridge, adjusting to the 4G pitch, were 34-12 down in the first half but came back to a final score of 37-36 , earning two losing bonus points . Tries were scored by Matt Lucas (2), Ross Gibbon, Ryan Hall, Adam Dix and a penalty try.
Against Llantwit Fardre, Cowbridge dominated the early exchanges and took the lead on six minutes with a kick ahead by wing Matt Oddy that centre James Jones gathered to dive over for an unconverted try. Cowbridge had scoring chances but couldn’t add to their score before Llantwit kicked a penalty on 28 minutes through full back Scott Burrows.
Minutes later, Cowbridge had a penalty of their own after good work by prop Louis Ingamells and No 8 Ryan Hall but the kick went wide. Cowbridge did score just before half time with a penalty kick to touch, second row Jack Forsyth won the line out and flanker Dan Apsee drove over for a second unconverted try.
The second half belonged to Llantwit. Scrum half Adam Dix, after a fine game, made way for Hywel Williams. At the mid-point, Llantwit’s loosehead prop made yards and off-loaded to his fellow prop to score under the posts for a try their full back converted. It was now 10-10 .
Full back Ed Thomas made a series of good counter attacking runs from full back but with no end product. With five minutes to go, Llantwit added the winning three points from a penalty for a high tackle and the game was theirs. Full time 10-13
Disappointment all round for a game Cowbridge controlled to the interval but didn’t score enough points. Hats off to Llantwit for a game plan that worked well in the second half. Their loyal supporters stayed for some time after the game.
Cowbridge Youth won their league despite the final game against Tonyrefail not going ahead. Congratulations to them for a fabulous season.
Cowbridge travel to second-placed Aberdare on 29th April and entertain Llantrisant at home on the evening of 3rd May.
