IN a thrilling first-round encounter of the Welsh Cup, Cowbridge RFC edged out Blaina RFC with a narrow 31-35 victory in a match filled with dynamic play and skilled performances.
The home side, Blaina, started the match with an impressive try, setting the tone for a competitive game. However, Cowbridge quickly responded, with Charlie Locke crashing over for their first try, showcasing the visitors’ determination. Evan Thomas followed suit, adding another try to Cowbridge’s tally, which began to build a commanding lead.
Blaina fought back, scoring another try to keep the pressure on Cowbridge. But the visitors were relentless, with Fraser McGhan adding to their scoreline before Max Lucas extended their lead further. At halftime, Cowbridge held a comfortable 14-28 advantage.
The second half saw Blaina regroup and come out strongly, scoring early to bring the score to 19-28. They then opted for a penalty kick, narrowing Cowbridge’s lead even further. However, Cowbridge’s Charlie Locke found the try line again, pushing the score to 22-35.
Blaina, undeterred, rallied back with three successful penalty kicks, tightening the match to a nail-biting finish. Despite their efforts, the final whistle blew with Cowbridge securing a hard-fought 31-35 victory.
