‘Downhill Derby’ cancelled due to forecast of extreme weather

Forecasts of extreme weather conditions this weekend has led to yet another popular event in the Vale of Glamorgan being postponed or cancelled.
Following on from Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospice’s decision recently to postpone a popular charity event scheduled for today, Penarth Town Council has followed suit by announcing the cancellation of today’s annual Penarth Summer Festival and Downhill Derby.
The free festival has been a popular annual tradition on the Esplanade in Penarth since the 1960s and features live music and refreshments, along with the ever-popular Downhill Derby, which was first staged in 2010. Home made go-karts would have competed for prizes and awards for speed and creativity.

In a statement yesterday, 14th July, the community council for Penarth said: “It is with deep regret that we have to announce the cancellation of tomorrow’s Penarth Summer Festival and Downhill Derby, scheduled for Saturday, July 15, 2023.
“Due to the anticipated high winds and adverse conditions expected along the Penarth Esplanade, we are no longer in a position to deliver the event as planned.
“Ensuring the safety of our participants and attendees is our primary concern.
“We sincerely apologise for any disappointment and inconvenience this announcement may cause. Your safety is our top priority, and we hope for your understanding in this regrettable situation.
“We look forward to gathering together for future events.”
