THE sun shone on a well-received first post lockdown concert, organised by the Gwyl Gerdd Dinas Powys Music Festival.
The concert, entitled, ‘In a monastery garden’ was performed by the ever-popular Dinas Powys Ecumenical Seven, our local brass ensemble, under the baton of Dr Haydn Jones.
The backdrop was the beautiful St Peters Church building, looking glorious in the September sunshine. The audience were spread across the church gardens, in garden chairs and rugs, complete with picnics and liquid refreshments.
They were treated to arrangements designed to appeal to a broad range of musical tastes. Beginning on a local theme with ‘Castell Dinas Powys’ – a lively march, composed for the DP Ecumenical 7. The musical journey continued with classics such as ‘Cavatina’, ‘I dreamed a dream’ and a lovely arrangement of ‘Grow old with me’.
There was plenty of audience participation with some Welsh singalong favourites including ‘Delilah’, ‘Sosban Fach’ and ‘Ar hyd y nos’. The afternoon was linked together by Dr Haydn Jones with his stories and jokes.
Community spirit
The event was a fantastic example of the community spirit in this lovely village. So many people giving their talents and time, free of charge, at a beautiful location to entertain folk who have been yearning to come together for so long.
Many congratulations to Dr Haydn Jones and the Ecumenical Seven for a job very well done and to the committee of the GGDPMF for their part in organising this wonderful concert.
