Five arrested following reports of city centre fight

Five people have been arrested following an incident in Cardiff city centre this morning.
Police were called to the Royal Arcade just after 8.00am following reports of a fight.
Five men aged 18, 19, 37, 38 and 44 have been arrested on suspicion of affray.
Three of the five have injuries that require medical attention including a 44-year-old man from Merthyr Tydfil who has a stab wound.
None of the injuries are described as life-threatening. A knife has been recovered for forensic examination.
Officers are studying CCTV to establish the exact circumstances and location of the fight.
Understandably there is shock and worry within the community when an incident such as this happens.
Levels of knife offences in the UK have risen over the last few years, and South Wales is no different to anywhere else in that respect.
Cardiff remains a safe place and tackling knife crime is a priority for the force.
Since April, the Cardiff Operation Sceptre Team, named after a national initiative led by the Metropolitan Police, has:
◾ arrested 178 people
◾ seized nearly 50 weapons
◾ carried out 421 stop searches
◾ recovered drugs and cash worth more than £3m.
This covert team is out there on the streets making it uncomfortable for anyone who matches the profile of those involved in knife crime.
Their work is complimented by our Organised Crime Unit and our Neighbourhood Policing Teams who continue to be a visible and proactive presence in the community.
Families and communities can play their part in helping to tackle serious violence by taking responsibility for their children and young adults who are on the fringes of criminality or at risk of carrying a knife.
