A FREE community celebration to mark the ‘International Day of Happiness and Spring Equinox’ is being held at the Knap Lake and Gardens, Barry today, 20th March.
The public are invited to gather at the Tree of Friendship at 5.30pm. The event, called ‘Happy Days’, will feature acoustic music from singer songwriters Thoby Davis and David Swallow.
There will also be an opportunity for people to share a poem, a song, a funny story, food items or anything else that they think may bring happiness to others.
The International Day of Happiness was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012. On the day, the UN General Assembly calls for people to focus on the small things that make their lives better, and this is the focus of the celebration at The Knap.
The March Equinox marks the sun’s crossing above the earth’s equator, moving from south to north, marking the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.
Happy Days is being organised by Art4u, a voluntary organisation that aims to make the viewing of art accessible for all. Glyn Pooley, founder of Art4u, said: “Our lives are so busy today with distractions from noise and electronic gadgets, but it’s becoming increasingly clear there are huge health benefits to be had from taking time away from these things.
“Generating peace and happiness is not only beneficial for ourselves but all those we interact with. We become kinder, more caring, and a joy to be around,” he said.
Glyn says all sections of the community can benefit from attending the celebration: “I’d like to welcome everybody of all faiths and none to our celebration, where they will be able to listen to some lovely music, appreciate artwork on display and take a walk around the lake.
“People will also have the opportunity to join in by sharing stories, poems, biscuits or anything else they think can bring joy and happiness into the lives of others,” he said.
The event is free to attend, but there will be an opportunity to make a voluntary donation to Art4u.
