FOR any relatively new business, holding a family open day is often an option – but a funeral director is not the first enterprise that springs to mind!
However, after being open in the Cowbridge area for two years, Carwyn Jones and wife-to-be Nia, who run Cowbridge Funeral Directors, decided that inviting the public to take a look at their business premises was a good idea.

The couple believe in taking a fresh look at funerals, and in not being afraid to offer something different to clients – and they have started as they mean to go on by taking premises on a business park – in this case the Vale Business Park in Llandow.
Carwyn said: “We are operating from a warehouse but people who visit soon forget that when they are shown into our bright modern offices and given a chance to spend some quiet time in our chapel of rest.”
Carwyn served for nine years in the Royal Navy, but through his family, he has 16 years’ experience in funeral direction. Nia has worked in the fashion industry.
When the Glamorgan Star visited, the premises were very busy, with families taking a look around and enjoying tea, coffee and cake. The only area off limits, of course, was the mortuary.
Nia said: “We can’t believe how many people came along today. We had no idea what sort of response we would get.”
