CHILDREN will have the opportunity to learn basic gardening skills during a free open day at Everyone’s Garden in Colcot, Barry tomorrow, 23rd March.
The garden, located between Winston Road and Elizabeth Avenue, was created two years ago when the Vale Council’s Community Investment Team worked with local volunteers to help transform it from wasteland into a space containing several planters, fruit trees, a play area, a play shed and a forest school area with a fire pit.
Home Education Wales and Spirit of Home Ed Wales are hosting a spring and Easter themed event at the garden this Saturday 11am to 2pm where Free Forest sessions will be held to give children an introduction to gardening and garden maintenance. No booking is necessary, and adults are also welcome to come along and help.
The free open day will also include face painting, a barbecue, a graffiti session and a table-top sale where people are advised to bring cash.
Organisers say there will be similar events held on a monthly basis until November, and that there will be a graffiti project in March and April, with space for 10 teenagers to take part.
An organiser, Donna Rapley, said: “Spring has just begun, and we’re really looking forward to our monthly events at Everyone’s Garden between now and the autumn.
“The way that patch of land has been transformed from an eyesore into a beautiful garden everybody can enjoy has been incredible. We’ve also had a compost toilet put in too, which has made an enormous difference.
“So many local organisations have played their part in making this happen, and we at Home Education Wales and Spirit of Home Ed Wales now want to nurture that space.”
