How the sale of a Llantwit home left a lasting legacy
IN Llantwit Major, the Bryn Illtyd Youth Trust is a charity that aims to help young people in the area, and it owes its existence to a local historian and academic.
Situated on the corner of Llanmaes Road and Windmill Lane, Bryn Illtyd was one of the homes belonging to William Abraham MP. It was later the home of historian and archaeologist Glyn Daniel and subsequently it was the local youth club. When the house/youth club was sold, the money was put into a charitable trust fund.
This was appropriate as Glyn Daniel was the recipient of a grant from the Glamorgan County Scholarship, which allowed him to study geology at Cardiff University and the church organ at Llandaff Cathedral for a year. In 1932, he went up to St John’s College, Cambridge – the start of a glittering academic career.
The Bryn Illtyd Youth Trust was set up as a charity in 1968 and now gives grants to young people and organisations in the area to pursue a hobby, take part in competitions/expeditions, and help fund extra-curricular activities.
Trustee Alyson Jones said: “To see if you can apply for funding, visit our Facebook page – Bryn Illtyd Youth Trust – and see if you qualify. Our next quarterly committee meeting takes place on Monday, 25th September, so applications need to be in by then.”
