Council to decide on application for 17 new homes

Council to decide on application for 17 new homes:

Plans for 17 new homes in a small village in the Vale of Glamorgan are seen as a “golden opportunity” to reduce speeding in the area.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s planning committee will tomorrow, 24th November, make a decision on an application for the affordable homes, which have been proposed for land off St Brides Road in Wick.

If approved, the homes would consist of four two bed houses, six three bed houses, three one bed bungalows and four one bed flats.

Wick Community Council and local county councillor, Carys Stallard, have been positive about the plans.

Cllr Stallard said the plans were a “golden opportunity” to address the issue of speeding through the village.

She said: “Wick is unusual in the rural Vale in having a broad and straight stretch of road running through it which means that many vehicles ignore the current 30mph restrictions: it is notorious.

“Residents deal daily with the negative impact of this. A new 20mph limit will still be ignored by many (without effective enforcement).

“The proposed development would necessitate a new junction with the main road on the western outskirts of the village where speeding vehicles are often in infringement of restrictions, accelerating as they leave or
approach the village.”

The ward member for St Bride’s Major went on to express her concern that vehicle activated signs (VAS) would be ineffective in preventing speeding in the vicinity.

She went on to suggest that automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) system should accompany the development.

An ANPR average speed system is often seen as more effective than VAS as drivers who do speed are more likely to be identified and caught.

Cllr Stallard added that she has “genuine concerns” that there “could well be an accident unless we adopt an effective approach to enforcement.”

Wick community council expressed similar concerns to Cllr Stallard, but stated that they would welcome affordable housing in the village.

A spokesperson for Wick Community Council said: “Recent developments in Wick have allowed young people who have been brought up in the village to return to live in the village when they start their own families and this is a welcome development.”

The application, which was made by Wales and West Housing Association, has a recommendation for approval.
