SPORT – Pencoed hang on for fine away win

Maesteg Celtic 20 – Pencoed 24

PENCOED opened the scoring in the early moments, Jack Bevan making the initial break before left wing Llew Gibbons was sent over in the corner, with Bevan adding a fine conversion.

‘Celtic’ soon responded, outside half George Richards breaking cleanly for Dewi Freeman to go over wide out. The home side then took the lead with a try from Rhys Bevan Jones. Celtic were enjoying the lion’s share of possession at this stage but it was Pencoed who were next on the scoreboard. Having been held up over the try line, they continued to press and No8 Ashley Bissett got the touchdown Bevan converted.

Pencoed increased their lead with the team try of the match, prop forward Josh Richards triggering off a combined move between forwards and backs , and reappearing for a third time to score a well-deserved try, Bevan converting for a 10 – 21 lead at the interval.

Play was to and fro at the start of the second half, punctuated with injuries to both sides. The home side then cut the deficit to 15 – 21 with a try from Jay Ronan. Adam Williams’ penalty gave Pencoed a nine-point lead with around 15 minutes remaining, but the home side kept themselves in the match with a bonus point try from Arran Williams.

It was anyone’s game at 20 – 24 with all to play for, then cruel luck struck match official Mr Ian Morris, who pulled up with a leg injury and the match unfortunately had to be abandoned.
