Builth Wells 29 – Pencoed 9
THIS was always going to be a difficult ask for a young Pencoed side travelling to mid Wales to face second in the league Builth Wells.
This was compounded by a lack of prop forwards which resulted in Pencoed, as per the rules, starting with 14 players. In fairness ‘The Bulls’ also had their selection problems as the farming fraternity, which normally provides their first-choice front row, were heavily involved in the lambing season.
Territorially. It was fairly even in the opening quarter before the home side scored with a try from flanker Tom Davies, Rhys Davies adding the extras.
Pencoed outside half Jack Bevan then put his side on the scoreboard with a 35-metre penalty goal. Builth Wells then picked up a yellow card on 37minutes and Bevan kicked his second penalty from around 48 metres.
The Bulls’ response was immediate, Davies slotting over a penalty goal. Tom Geere then picked off a home lineout throw to put Pencoed on the offensive and Bevan notched his third penalty goal. On the stroke of half time, the Bulls extended their lead to 15-9, hooker Ryan Davies driven over by his pack colleagues .
Early in the second half, Pencoed picked up a yellow and, moving the ball wide. the home side took full advantage with a try from wing three-quarter Luke Morgan, Davies converting to lead 22-9.
What has become apparent in the season to date is that this young Pencoed side will not lie down and at this juncture they enjoyed their best period of the match. Both Connor Jones and Morgan Jones went close for Pencoed and their 13 men were pressing for a score, unfortunately spilling the ball under the home posts.
Despite reduced numbers and a 13-point deficit, Pencoed continued to hold their own deep into the second half until a cruel bounce played its part. With the ball breaking in favour of the home side, centre Dorian Williams raced away from around half way for the bonus point try. Davies converted for a final scoreline of 29-9.
For Pencoed, Corey John was most prominent in this spirited display ,probably enjoying his best game for the club. Fellow pack members Ashley Bissett and Luke Hall were also to the fore. Behind the scrum, Rhys Bargery, Bevan, and Jack Picton all made important tackles in what was a committed all round team effort.
That said, the Bulls were deserved winners on the day and the after match hospitality made everyone of the 134 miles round trip well worth it.
