SPORT – Pencoed lose out in 10-try thriller

Pencoed Youth 29 - Gowerton Youth 30

AS the scoreline suggests, there was very little between the sides in this WRU National Youth Bowl and Ospreys Youth Trophy match, the teams finishing on five tries apiece.

For Gowerton, tries came from Cam Bevan (two) Iwan Pearce Morgan (two) and Scott Morris with John Mann adding a conversion and a penalty goal. Try scorers for Pencoed were Wil Davies, Iwan Powell, Ethan Twine and Morgan Richards (two). Powell’s solo effort was the pick of the tries and Richards’ brace took him to six tries in the four games to date. Pencoed’s second row Jake Hall was chosen as man of the match by the opposition coaches.

This Pencoed side is new to youth rugby and can feel somewhat unlucky in defeat, having created chance after chance in the opening quarter in particular, only to remain scoreless during this period. In contrast, the visitors’ first two visits into Pencoed territory resulted in two tries.

Gowerton maintained their lead during the second half, but late tries and a strong Pencoed finish with multiple phases almost snatched victory. With no games scheduled for the immediate weeks ahead, the team is looking for friendly fixtures in the opening weeks of the New Year before the Ospreys league resumes on 20th January.

Everyone at Pencoed Rugby Football Club felt very proud of members of their under-16 squad who were part of the Bridgend & District Schools in the Dewar Shield Final at the Principality Stadium, defeating Mynydd Mawr Schools by 19 – 18. Match day squad members were Louis Cooper, Sam Bilgram Coates, Mason Curry, Harley Moore, Jack Morgan, Ioan Phillips, Lucas Richards. Well done lads!
