SPORT – Pencoed’s memorial rugby tournament is a big hit
AT Pencoed RFC, Boxing Day is an occasion for family fun with a tag tournament in memory of their beloved president, Mal Summers, who gave so much to the club as a player, the first captain after the Second World War, and then committee man, kit man, and bus man. Mal had done it all for the club.
The tournament has mixed abilities from all sections entering teams of six. Mal`s two grandsons played in their team, ‘Mal`s Mooers’, a tribute to their grandfather who was a farmer. New, current, former players, and minis and juniors played alongside each other. Pencoed’s Cardiff player Dewi Cross was one of them.

Mal’s daughter Suzanne Daniel said: “Dad would’ve been so proud of his club yet again. It was fantastic to see all ages coming together to celebrate the beautiful game. As a family we truly appreciate all the hard work that goes on to organise the day and long may it continue.” Suzanne also presented the trophy to the winners “Charlie’s Angel”.

The proceeds of the raffle and donations were given to the charity of men’s mental health awareness group ‘Dads and Lads’ – nominated by Mal’s family.
