How an old photo struck a chord for a Llantwit family
THE Llantwit Major Local History Society were delighted to get a visit from a family following the Glamorgan Star’s publication (22nd August, page 24) of our 1970 photo of East Street.
In the photo of East Street there is a lady on the narrow pavement on the left and she was recognised by one of her sons, who then passed on the information to his 91-year-old father, the husband of the late Mrs Winifred Sullivan. Mr Aubrey Sullivan then visited the local history archive room to show us the same jumper that was worn by his wife in the 1970 photograph.

The jumper was knitted by her mother in around 1968 and not only is it in excellent condition, 56 years after it was knitted, but a passing lady in Llantwit mentioned to Mr Sullivan that the knitting style of the jumper was called “Intarsia” a technique used to create patterns of multiple colours.
In the attached photo taken by his granddaughter Kyra, Mr Sullivan can be seen wearing the same jumper on the same spot!
Mr Sullivan was a semi-professional footballer in his youth and on moving to Llantwit Major became a junior football coach. Some people may still remember him and his four sons, who were also involved in Llantwit Major football.
If you have any interesting photographs of the 1960s 70s or later, would you consider lending them to the society so we can record them for the future. If you have any photographs, please contact us via , or on Fridays at the Archive room in the Old School, 3pm – 5pm.
