Remembrance bench appeal will continue
AN APPEAL to raise funds to replace three public benches in Barry is to continue despite being hit by Covid.
As the benches overlook Barry Memorial Hall and its Cenotaph, a design in keeping with Remembrance is the preferred option.
The appeal organiser Rob Curtis said: “The benches are situated on top of one of the former shelters in lower Gladstone Gardens (known as the blind park), opposite the Barry Memorial Hall. We would like to replace them with three specifically-made memorial benches commemorating the men and women who have lost their lives serving our country.
“I am proud that we have raised enough for one of the benches but we desperately need more funds. The town of Barry has a proud history of remembering and honouring its war dead.
“The benches, of various designs, portray silhouetted images made from steel and are UK made. The choice of benches will be made in consultation with the local Royal British Legion.
“The pandemic has made fundraising extremely difficult but I want to ensure the sacrifice of our service men and women is not forgotten. I hope people will consider donating by going to our gofundme page.
“We fully understand that these are difficult times for businesses but feel it is vitally important that we do not forget those who gave their future for our today. As an acknowledgement to those businesses or individuals who kindly donate £100 or more, we will attach a small plaque acknowledging their contribution.”
