Significant progress made at Barry Station
Network Rail has released a time lapsed video (above) and photo images of major improvement works being carried out at Barry Station.
The station is progressing in a £3.3m upgrade project with the works being in full swing to install a new bridge, lifts and facilities at the station by late September.
Funded by the ‘Access for All’ programme, the improvements will provide train passengers with a step free access between platforms two and three for the first time.
The installation leads on from a similar Access for All project completed at Cadoxton Station, and now takes the stretch of railway between Barry Island and Cardiff Central one step closer to being a fully accessible line.
A 220-tonne crane was used to lift the bridge and lift shafts into place overnight on Saturday 5th February with the carpark closed for safety reasons from Monday 31st January to Sunday 6th February.
Network Rail and contractors Centregreat Rail will now install new lighting, telecoms systems, CCTV and upgrades to the station’s facilities, before being fully opened in late September.
Barry Station has remained open to passengers throughout the installation works with a temporary footbridge put in place and rail services not being affected.
