It was a bad day at the office for Sully Centurions as the Firsts and Seconds were beaten heavily. Both sides had several regulars missing due to injury and availability.
The First XI entertained Newport Thirds at Burnham Avenue on a drizzly afternoon and batted first. Dave Goodway and Gethin Hicks’s opening partnership lasted 12 overs before Hicks was caught and bowled by Masood for 13. Ricki Griffett and Goodway then shared a half century partnership until Goodway fell for 24, being caught off the bowling of Akhtar in the 27th over. Ricki Griffett, who top scored with 45, also fell to Akhtar with the score on 108. Thirteen from skipper Lloyd Bruce, 24 from Jake Griffett and a 10 from Ben Spear were the only other meaningful contributions as Centurions slumped to 161 all out in the final over. Akhtar’s 4 for 37 were the best bowling figures for Newport.
After the break it looked as though a fightback was on the cards as Goodway struck twice in the second over to leave the visitors on 5 for 2. However, this was a false dawn and Newport captain Thompson, along with number four batsman Aston, took a liking to the bowling and shared an unbeaten partnership of 140 to run out worthy winners. Thomson played the anchor role, finishing on 38 not out. However, Aston’s aggressive innings included 16 fours and two sixes, as he ended on 107 not out, with game ending in the 26th over with no further loss of wickets.

The Second XI made the short trip to Dinas Powys with a team containing some ‘veterans’ and found themselves on the wrong end of a nine-wicket defeat. Batting first, the Sully opening pair took the score to 31 when Jason Hicks fell to Kabir for 10. Skipper Dan Merchant was Kabir’s next victim when he was bowled for 9 to leave the score on 50 for 2.
Alex Kelsey also went for 9, the first of Fogden’s four wickets, when he was stumped in the 18th over with the score on 62. In spite of some middle order heroics from Zia Gehlan (21) and Lewis Pyke (32) the Centurions’ innings came to an end on 142 for 7 after the 40 overs.
In reply, the Dinas openers Lewis and Clark reached 91 before Clark departed for 19. Vowles joined the fray and played a solid support role as Lewis hit 85 to secure the victory with plenty of overs to spare.
This brings the Second XI’s four-match winning streak to a halt and allows Dinas Powys to leapfrog Sully to go fifth in the table
