BARRY Town Council picked up a prestigious public sector award on earlier this month, winning Civic Office of the Year.
The National Association of Civic Officers has promoted the Civic Office of the Year Award since 2003 and the award has been won by a wide range of councils – from a very large City Council to a small Town Council. The award is biennial and was celebrated this year at The Council House, Birmingham, with a two-day training event and an awards dinner.
The council’s engagement and events team won the Civic Office of the Year award 2022/23, only the second Welsh Council to have ever won the award and the first Welsh town council to win.
Amanda Webb, of Barry Town Council’s engagement and events team, went to Birmingham, despite the snow, to pick up the award and represent her team, the council and Wales.
The engagement and events team supports the Mayor of Barry during the year in office, planning diaries and otganising charity fundraising events such as Barry Bingo, Horse Racing Nights, Salsa Night, tea and coffee mornings, community engagement opportunities such as Mayor on the Move and accompanying the Mayor and Deputy Mayor to events.
Emily Forbes, Chief Officer, said: “This is a great achievement and recognition for the team working together brilliantly to support the Mayor and highlight the wider work of the town council too. I’m very proud of the team and of our collective efforts as a council working towards the wellbeing of the whole community, which is wonderfully demonstrated in this accolade!”
