Crossing works to pause in Porthcawl

WORK on the installation of the second of two new pedestrian crossings in Porthcawl has had to be postponed to avoid causing disruption during the spring and summer tourist season.

The construction of the two new crossings was originally scheduled to take place between January and April. However, contractors working on behalf of Aldi have now confirmed that neither crossing is going to be finished before the April bank holiday weekend as originally planned.

Work is close to completion on the first crossing.

A Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC) spokesperson said: “The first crossing, which is near the Portway, is almost complete and requires lighting units and power to be installed before it can be used. As Aldi have confirmed that this final work can take place without causing further significant disruption or inconvenience, the crossing is expected to be available for use very soon.

“Associated works to provide a new pedestrian link through to Hillsboro Place are also being finalised, and Aldi have further confirmed that the link will soon be ready for use.

“The delay will mainly affect the construction of the second crossing, which is located on the Eastern Promenade opposite the entrance to Coney Beach funfair. This has already been rescheduled and will now take place during the autumn and winter period.”

Cllr John Spanswick, cabinet member for Climate Change and Environment, said: “Both crossings form part of a package of highway, pedestrian and cycleway improvements that the council negotiated while granting permission for the development of the new food store at nearby Salt Lake, and residents can be assured that both Aldi and the council remain committed towards their delivery.”
