A big win for Barry Wanderers

SPORT | Cricket:

Barry Wanderers won a one-sided encounter against Ponthir Seconds at Hayes Point on Saturday 16th July. Wanderers won the toss and chose to bat on a hot day.

The Ponthir bowlers struggled to make a breakthrough with runs coming easily both off the bat and in the way of extras. Wanderers’ openers Coleman and Blundell went past 100 before Blundell was removed by the slower bowling on offer for a well-crafted 39.  Abhilash came and went to the same bowler for 6.

Coleman went past 50 in serene fashion before he played a tired stroke and returned to the pavilion for a well-made 56. This only brought captain Ram to the wicket. After the previous week’s disappointment, Ram and his partner in crime Kunal knocked the ball around to all parts. Ram finished on a fantastic 91 while Kunal, who was good at rotating the strike, concluded the innings on 66. To watch this pair was reminiscent of Kapil Dev and Mohinder Amaranth. The Wanderers’ finished their inning on 350-4, which appeared significantly above par.

Ponthir started solidly enough but when the Wanderers’ brought on their change bowlers Ed Williams and their irrepressible captain Ram, their innings took a nose dive. Ed Williams, with his leg spin, claimed three victims with figures of 3-44, with Ram going one better with figures of 4-24. It took Luke Grant, of Coco’s fame, to return with the ball to do his best Elmer Fudd routine by getting rid of the bunnies at the bottom of the order. Ponthir had no resistance to the gangly Barry boy with the innings finishing on 168. Wanderers were winners by 182 runs. Ram and Gito will return to India this week for a heroes’ welcome.
