Good win for Centurions over Monkswood

SPORT | Cricket – Good win for Centurions over Monkswood:

Sully Centurions got back to winning ways with a five-wicket victory over Monkswood at Burnham Avenue.

The visitors won the toss and opted to bat on an extremely hot afternoon but found runs hard to come by as Centurions’ opening bowlers Nathan Cuddihy and Kieron Ferriday bowled an accurate line. By the time the first wicket fell in the fifth over there were only nine runs on the board.

However, two partnerships followed which put Monkswood back in the game. First Williamson and Malson shared a second wicket stand of 43, then a century partnership between Malson (76 not out) and Jones (61) left the score on 169 for 3. Skipper Lloyd Bruce used seven bowlers in an attempt to get the valuable bonus points, but only five wickets fell, with the wickets shared amongst the bowling attack. The total of 212 for 5, however, was certainly an obtainable target.

After tea, the Sully opening pair of David Goodway and Ricki Griffett put on 76 for the first wicket before Goodway fell to Malson for 28. Griffett reached his half century before falling to Trumper in the 17th over. Tom Davies and Ben Spear pushed the score along until Davies was bowled by Trumper for 36. Lloyd Bruce added 43 runs before he was trapped lbw by Webb with the score on 201. Ben Spear’s 24 was the other score of significance as the target was reached in the 32nd over.

The Second XI travelled to table toppers St Fagans Thirds and, in spite of a heroic captain’s innings by Dan Merchant, were beaten heavily in the hot sunshine.

Batting first, the home side’s openers had reached 60 before Burrows was run out for 30 in the 11th over. This led to what turned out to be a match winning century partnership between Pugh (55) and Elliott (75). The remarkable statistic from the innings was that three of the four wickets were run outs. Only Nicky Jones, who had Dom Griffiths caught for 26, captured a bowling wicket for Centurions. Carter, with 32 not out, was the other significant scorer for St Fagans as they ended the allotted 40 overs on 254 for 4.

In reply, Centurions lost early wickets and by the fourth over they were 16 for 3. Chris Coles joined Dan Merchant and the pair steadied the ship somewhat by adding 44 runs for the next wicket, when Coles fell to Nicholls for 14. Merchant kept on and reached a season’s best of 71 before being caught off the bowling of Jack Griffiths. Jason Hicks, batting lower down the order than usual due to an injured thumb, hit 28 before he became the first of Carter’s three victims. Of the remaining batsmen, only Jag Gorsia reached double figures and the innings ended with Sully all out for 162.

Other notable bowling performances for St Fagans were Nicholls, who had 3 for 36 and Jack Griffiths (2 for 16)
