Colwinston’s environmental project is looking good!

Colwinston’s environmental project is looking good! By PHILIP IRWIN

A community project in Colwinston is making great progress and villagers are starting to see a big difference after hard work by volunteers.

The Old Ford Project in Colwinston is a restoration and environmental enhancement scheme involving the village’s Ancient Well, Clapper Footbridge, Watercress beds, woodland, hedges, Colwinston Brook and Springs.

The project was conceived by the community council several years ago and is now well underway with several objectives achieved. These include the restoration of the old Clapper Bridge over Colwinston Brook, one of only a few left in Glamorgan.

A wide variety of wildflowers have been planted.

The restoration of the Old Well is nearly complete and represents one of the main sources of water for the village pre-mains supply. A section of hedge was laid last winter by the Cardiff Volunteer Group and should provide a diverse wildlife habitat for the next 50 years.

A project spokesperson said: “A pond fed by springs has been excavated to provide more habitats for wildlife and hopefully some watercress. Over 20 species of wildflowers have been planted in areas around Colwinston Brook pond and alongside the newly-laid hedge. The pollinators have had a fantastic time this summer and other insects and invertebrates have attracted a wide range of birds and other predators. A colourful buzzing of activity enjoyed by villagers and other visitors this summer.

“The sky above seems to be full of buzzards, kites, kestrels along with a large number of swallows, herons, ducks, coots and others visiting wetland areas. Our next big challenge is the woodland area beyond the pond and wildflower areas. It has not been managed for many years and is overgrown and dominated by diseased Ash and Sycamore Trees. The plan is to thin the trees, remove the dangerous Ash trees and replant with several different types of trees. Bird, bat and dormice boxes will be installed.

“This project could not have happened without the dedication and support of Colwinston Community Council, local business support, our volunteers and the Vale Council’s ‘Stronger Communities’ grant. Our small, dedicated group of volunteers are always looking for help and advice. If you are involved in a similar project or qualified to offer advice please get in contact by email at ”
