Cowbridge Bowling Club end of season challenge and competition
Success for the Cowbridge ladies in the Barwick Cup
AT the end of the summer season, it is a club tradition for the men of Cowbridge Bowling Club to challenge the ladies to contest the Barwick Cup.
In 2018, the ladies won by the narrowest of margins, but in 2019, the men managed to regain the trophy. The Barwick Cup was not contested in 2020 due to lockdown, so interest was high in this year’s match.
At the halfway point, the men were five shots in front, but from then on the ladies pulled ahead, giving them a final aggregate score of 114 – 84. The ladies won on five rinks with only one to the men – a comprehensive victory for the ladies.
The rink scores were: Margaret Cooper, Mary Dowdle, Jane Westlake, Sylvia Hole 12, Terry Dunsworth, Owen Hopkins, Ron Dobie, Alan Wallace 18; Diane Purnell, Helena Snelling, Diane Lloyd, Kay Edwards 26, Peter Rice, David Westlake, Mike Fahey, Ken Payne 14; Tina Payne, Corry Bufton/Joy Woolford, Phyllis Price, Lynda Wilson 22, John Collin, John Hunt, Gerwyn Watkins, Bryan Hole 11; Liz Gough, Carol Davies, Jean Hunt, Shirley Wilkinson 17, Tom Purnell, John Jones, Brian Williams, Colin Wilson 13; Diane Radley, Leslie Crutchley, Caryl Davies, Elaine Dobie, 20, Alan Jordan, Mike Harris, Charles Saunders, John Nixon 19; Sandra Collin, Pat Holdsworth, Shirley Dunsworth, Helen Nixon 17, Gerry Lloyd, Nick Gough, John Wathes, Dennis Snelling 9. Congratulations to our ladies on a magnificent performance.
Bowl The Jack

The club has also held its inaugural ‘Bowl the Jack’ competition. The object was to bowl the jack from one corner of the green to the opposite corner, where target zones had been marked on the green, the closest to the corner being the highest scoring zone.
Around 40 people attended, and after everyone had bowled three jacks, there was a tie for top scorer between Gerry Lloyd and Roger Barwick, and after a final shootout, Roger was declared the winner of the magnificent trophy, hand-crafted by the competition organiser, Ken Payne.
All our league and internal competitions are now completed, but we shall continue to play on our green, weather permitting, throughout the winter in a Winter League pairs competition organised by our competition secretary, Alan Wallace.
