Sport – Centurions let chance of victory slip away
THE Sully Centurions faced the early league leaders Ponthir, at Burnham Avenue, and ended up losing a match that, at one stage, they looked like winning.
The decision to field, after winning the toss, looked a good one. Wickets began to fall almost immediately. At one stage, opening bowlers John Gee and Nathan Cuddihy had the visitors at 44-5. But a gutsy fightback by Ayres (56 not out) and Norman (31) helped pull things round for Ponthir.
In spite of two wickets for Tom Davies and another for returning Centurion Shae Ellis, Ponthir managed to end up with a creditable, but still reachable, total of 167-8 after the 40 overs were complete.
In reply, Centurions lost some early wickets but had pulled back to 76-4 at the halfway stage. But, despite some heroics with the bat from Nathan Cuddihy (25) towards the end of the innings, Sully fell 28 runs short. Ellis (38) and Daz (22) were the other notable scorers, but this was a lost opportunity for Centurions.
Bluck and Norman, with three wickets each, were the standout bowlers for the visitors.
Sully Centurions 138 all out, Ponthir 167-8
Pitch vandals damage Porth’s pitch
The Second XI travelled to Porth and were greeted with a pitch that had suffered overnight vandalism. Coupled with the early morning rain, it was a surprise that the game was played at all. After a delay the game was reduced to 30 overs.
Batting first, Porth made a solid start, reaching 100 for the loss of three wickets. The home side pressed home their advantage to post 209-7 after the allotted overs. Hill (61) with good support from the middle order, was the top scorer for Porth. Sami, with three wickets, stood out for Sully.
After tea, Centurions lost early wickets. However, a partnership of 40 between Sami and Gurvinder Singh gave Sully some hope. This was short lived, however, as wickets began to fall regularly, with the final total being 120 all out.
Sami (55) was by far the standout batsman for Centurions. For the home side, Powell (3-14) and Capel (3-25) were the pick of the bowlers.
Porth 209-7, Sully Centurions II 120 all out.
This weekend the First XI are at home to Pontymister while the Seconds travel to Abercarn,
