Childminders call for support for Michelle after stroke tragedy

By MARCUS STEAD

AN ONLINE fundraiser has been launched to provide financial support to the family of a mother-of-three from Barry who faces a long road to recovery after suffering a serious stroke.

Professional childminder Michelle Hoskins, 39, appeared to be in good health and was looking forward to Christmas when she suffered a stroke, and she has remained in a critical condition at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff ever since.

Michelle lives in Barry with her husband, Paul and her three young children, Amy, Christopher and Chloe.

Her work colleague Sarah Sharpe said: “This has come as a great shock to us all. It was totally unexpected. Michelle was out celebrating Christmas on the Friday, and by the Sunday she was seriously ill in hospital.”

Sarah said that Michelle is held in high regard by her fellow childminders: “Michelle lives for her family, her children are her everything.

“She’s really, really proud to be a childminder, and she had to jump through a lot of hoops to become registered with Care Inspectorate Wales.

“A lot of people think childminding is just babysitting, but there’s a lot more to it than that. We have to follow a curriculum and we’re subject to inspections.

“Michelle has a big heart, and she loves every minute of her job.

“It’s really a vocation for us. We’re not that well paid and you couldn’t do it just for the money. Michelle does it because she loves being with children,” she said.

Donations from the fundraiser will go towards making up for lost income while Michelle is unable to work, travel and related costs for hospital visits and appointments, day-to-day household expenses and additional family support.

Sarah said: “Michelle faces a long road to recovery and the family needs our help. Every contribution, whether large or small, will help provide stability, reassurance and peace of mind while Michelle focuses on getting better.”
