PENCOED RFC returned to league action following a month’s break and their home support did not have to wait long for their opening score, full back Iwan Powell slicing through midfield to score at the posts, with Rhys Clarke converting.
Pencoed soon increased their lead, hooker Morgan Richards applying the finish to a driving maul. Birchgrove then pressured the home line but a solid defence kept the Pencoed line intact. Pencoed struck back with a swift counter-attack which saw left wing Elliott Frewen show his finishing prowess, stepping the nearest defender before racing over halfway out, Clarke adding the extras.
Just before the interval, Pencoed broke down the right and good inter passing amongst the pack saw second row Lewis Bowen go over. Clarke converted and Pencoed led 26-0 at the interval.
A clever front-of-the-lineout move deep in the visitors’ 22 saw Pencoed go further ahead, back row forward Tom Geere the extremely grateful recipient of the final pass and celebrating with an exquisite swallow dive finish. Clarke converted.
A scrum brought the next home score, Geere doing the ‘hard yards’ and the supporting Bowen drove over, with Clarke converting. A solo effort from some 50 metres-plus from Powell provided the next Pencoed score, Clarke converting.
To their credit, Birchgrove scored a well-deserved consolation try and conversion which their battling efforts throughout deserved. Pencoed had the final say however, Richards getting his second try and Pencoed ran out 52-7 winners.
