WITH Sully Centurions First XI match at Cardiff cancelled due to a wet pitch, the Second XI’s home game against top of the table Radyr took centre stage.
After being invited to bat first by Radyr, an early wicket fell when Jez Chaudhry fell to Rowlands for 11 in the fourth over. However, this brought Vasant to the crease and he and Gurwinder ‘Sonu’ Singh shared a 78-run partnership for the second wicket. Sonu had reached 30 when Wroe had him caught in the 15th over.
A mini collapse was on the cards as the next two wickets fell for just 10 runs. But Vasant continued to find the boundary and, when he was joined by Gabe Howard, they put on 68 runs for the fifth wicket. Vasant eventually fell for 92, agonisingly close to a century. His innings contained five fours and seven sixes!
Kapil Rokad joined Gabe and continued where Vasant left off – scoring quickly to keep the pressure on the visiting attack. Howard was caught and bowled by Brain for 35, with the score on 224. With only a couple of overs remaining, caution was flung to the wind and another two wickets fell for the addition of 11 runs. Kapil was eventually trapped lbw for 22, to leave the score on 235 for 8 at the end of the 40 overs. The wickets were shared around, with Holburt and Wroe getting two each.
After tea, Radyr started as though they meant business, with Jones and Wroe putting on 44 for the first wicket. Jones was out lbw to Shan Rehman for 15 and Wroe followed soon after, when Shan bowled him for 21 – leaving Radyr on 50-2. The visitors forged ahead, however, with Marsh (30) and Gadd (27) sharing an 80-run stand before Marsh was bowled by Bharat. Six runs later, Gadd was back in the pavilion – victim of another lbw, this time from Imran.
The target was looking further away for Radyr and in spite of a couple of late partnerships, the tail found themselves bogged down. Eventually, the game ended when Vasant took a caught and bowled to dismiss Rowlands, with one ball left in the final over. It was a fitting way to finish, as Vasant was definitely man of the match for his 92 with the bat and bowling figures of 3-36.
This victory takes Centurions to second place, snapping at the heels of Radyr.
