Pencoed tangled up by ‘Seaweeds’

Porthcawl RFC 26 - Pencoed 12.

THE home side were quickly out of the blocks with a try from left wing Alex Williams in the third minute, Elliot Bennet adding the extras.

With most of the half evenly fought and Pencoed edging the set piece, a charged down kick behind their own posts on the stroke of half time gave the ‘Seaweeds’ a somewhat fortuitous 14-0 lead, Pencoed had not turned their period of pressure on the home line into points.

The second half provided Porthcawl with another early score to lead 21-0. Fifteen minutes into the half, Pencoed got on the scoresheet with a try from replacement Brandon Mullen. It was not to be Pencoed’s day, however. The home side were awarded their bonus point try under a mass of bodies to cement their lead. Pencoed were to have the last say on the scoreboard, Aaron Leyshon picking a good line to cross under the posts, Iwan Powell converting to bring about the final score of 26-12

With Pencoed playing resources stretched on the day, the Development XV remarkably ran out 56-7 winners to record their fourth victory from as many games. Tried flowed from both backs and forwards, Rhys Bending (2) Llew Gibbons (2) Josh Davies, Tom Daniels, Wil Davies, Aaron Songhurst, skipper Owain Clarke and the evergreen Ricky Somers, with Ruebin Lewis adding three conversions and controlling matters well from half back. On Saturday (3rd October) the Development XV are at home to Tondu, 2.30pm ko.
